Those Brits really know how to write and produce for the telly. For a story lover like me, the BBC and NETFLIX make me happy, happy, happy.
Everybody knows and loves Downton Abbey. It’s more than awesome and I was so sad when the last episode aired this past season. To fill the gap until season four begins, I’ve got not one but TWO other BBC recs to share. Great storylines, amazing characterization and fabulous sets and costumes. So here you go and your welcome!
It’s a modern day spin on the classic. Each episode (TV-14) watches more like a movie because of the detailed plot development and hour and a half-ish length. Seasons one and two are both on Netflix, but there are only three episodes per season. Boo.
Bonus fun. John Watson is played by Martin Freeman who also played one of my favorite characters of all time, Bilbo Baggins of The Hobbit. Win. Win. And be ye warned. The last episode of season two was so intense, I had to have my 16-year-old son (who discovered this gem by the way) rewatch it with me to explain. Witty, rapid fire dialogue and Sherlock is absolutely brilliant.
Completely different, but equally impressive. It’s another period drama that doesn’t disappoint. Again, definitely TV-14 for adult situations. It’s based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth and set in the impoverished section of London’s East End. Two seasons of one hour-long episodes on Netflix.
Young women and nuns working in a nursing convent amid grim circumstances. Oh my word, these stories are so good. They make me eternally grateful that my children were born in a Texas hospital in the late 1990s. Just saying.
Summer is coming…Enjoy!
John and I started watching Sherlock this past weekend. So fun to have a good entertaining story. Thanks for the tip!
